Prodigal Aloha

prod-i-gal (adjective) – spending resources freely and recklessly; wastefully extravagant
a-lo-ha (noun) – affection, love, peace, compassion, mercy

We’re a group of sinners who desperately need God’s recklessly extravagant grace and are passionately working to build a safe harbor for people in the same boat. Prodigal Aloha is our commitment to care for the “least of these” in our community by lavishing them with extravagant, reckless grace.

COMMUNITY GROUP COMPASSION MINISTRIES
Just as Jesus addressed the needs of the whole person, each of our community groups strives to meet physical and emotional needs along with spiritual needs in our community. From cookouts at Old Stadium Park to playtime with the kids at Kakaako Shelter, we seek to follow Jesus’ command: “When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you” (Luke 14:13-14).

COMMON GRACE – KEIKI MENTORING
One of our most meaningful ministries is our new partnership with Common Grace. Individuals in our church volunteer to mentor at-risk keiki in local schools who have been identified by principals or counselors as needing some extra attention. Interested in being a mentor? Email Matt.

HOMELESS HOUSING INITIATIVE
There are a significant amount of homeless in the islands of Hawaii and the problem is growing. In the current economic situation the unemployment rate is rising and so is the number of individuals and families that will suffer chronic homelessness. In the past government and other groups had created a safety net to help those in need. This safety net has recently been frayed or completely removed due to budget cuts an all levels.

Decades of research has shown that homeless recovery and rehabilitation is exceedingly difficult without secure housing (which most shelters do not provide). But the secure housing offered by homeless transitional programs almost always come with strict criteria for acceptance (such as 90 days of sobriety before admission). This results in a Catch-22: Homeless can’t get secure housing until they are clean, they can’t get clean until they have secure housing.

We hope to break through this cycle with an infusion of reckless grace. Over the next few years, we will be working to provide housing for the chronically homeless in our community in a variety of ways. More details are coming!
